The Coffee Producer’s Story: Andrés Cardona
Andrés Cardona grew up surrounded by the aroma of coffee and the rhythms of farm life, thanks to his family’s longstanding coffee tradition. From the age of 12, he started working with coffee, learning the trade, and falling in love with the process of cultivation and harvesting. As a proud member of the Young Producer Program, Andrés is creating his own successful coffee business while honoring his roots.
Today, Andrés manages Villa Lucía, his uncle’s farm nestled in the lush mountains of Santa Bárbara, Antioquia, Colombia. This farm, located at an elevation of 1650 meters above sea level, is home to varieties such as Colombia, Castillo, and Cenicafe. His commitment to quality is evident in the meticulous care he takes in cultivating the coffee.
One of Andrés Cardona’s proudest achievements is his creation of Luna Azul coffee, named after the “blue moon” due to its unique flavor profile of blueberries and dark chocolate. This coffee has become a symbol of his dedication and ambition, reflecting both his hard work and his innovative approach to coffee production.

The process behind Luna Azul is unique and precise.
First, the cherries undergo one week of fermentation in open tanks, allowing them to develop complex flavors. After fermentation, they are depulped without water, which helps retain the mucilage—the sticky layer of the cherry that surrounds the bean—resulting in a sweeter and more flavorful cup. The beans are then spread out on raised drying beds, where they are carefully dried for 1 to 3 weeks, depending on weather conditions at the farm, until they reach 11% moisture. This careful, hands-on approach ensures that each bean reaches its full potential in flavor.
